When buying a used motorcycle, it's essential to inspect the bike thoroughly before purchasing it. Even though the bike may look great and in perfect condition, hidden issues could make it unsafe or unreliable. To ensure you don’t get stuck with a lemon, here is an inspection checklist that will help you buy with confidence!

Inspecting the Body

You’ll want to start the inspection by checking the motorcycle for any signs of cosmetic damage, like dents, scratches, or broken parts. Look closely at the paint job and see if there are any rust spots on any of the metal components.

Although a scratch or minor dent may not be of much concern, multiple scrapes could indicate that the bike has been involved in several accidents or crashes. Extensive cosmetic damage could also suggest a lack of proper maintenance.

Check the fuel tank for any signs of flaking or damage to the paint. It is also important to inspect the sides and fenders of the bike for any visible damage. Test the seat to ensure that the foam has not collapsed and that there are no tears. You’ll want to carefully examine accessories, such as windshields, to ensure they have been installed correctly.

Engine Inspection

Before you arrange to view and inspect the used motorcycle, you’ll want to advise the seller that you plan to inspect it cold. That’s the only way to make an accurate assessment of the engine. You never know if a seller might start the motorcycle before you arrive in an attempt to hide any startup issues.

Inspect the engine and other components by starting the motorcycle and listening for strange noises, like clanking or grinding. Pay close attention to how the bike runs, as well as how it shifts gears when you ride it around a bit. Remember to check for any oil leaks that may indicate a problem with the seals or gaskets.

Tires

When inspecting a used motorcycle, the wheels can provide valuable insights into its condition and how well it was maintained. Avoid purchasing a bike with rotted tires or balding treads. To check the tightness of the spokes, tap each of them with a screwdriver handle and listen for a ping sound. If you hear a flat sound instead, it means that there is a loose spoke. Last but not least, spin the wheels to detect any dents or wobble.

If you’ve taken your time to run through this used motorcycle inspection checklist and everything seems to be in good shape, you may have just found your dream ride!
